WordPress Page Speed including Amazon S3

Getting WordPress web site speed to move faster can be tough. If a site is checked via GTMetrix or Google’s Pagespeed tool, it’s easy to get confused as to what it’s telling you.

You’ll be told to optimized images, leverage browser caching, eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content, and more.

I ran into a page speed issue recently and found that the best way to deal with it is:

  • Call your hosting and have them run some speed tests for you.
  • Disable plugins one by one, testing your page speed after each disable to see if the load speed is faster.  Keeping the number of plugins to a minimum can be key to a fast site.
  • Optimize your images. I used Photoshop.
  • Set up Amazon S3 and Cloudfront. Need a step by step guide? Here’s a link to a PDF download.

Ultimately, I found that the site I was working on was affected by having both WooCommerce and JetPack running at the same time. And the theme was old….we’ll be updating soon.
